Dog Food Supplements

Many dogs need supplements in their regular diets for a variety of reasons. Supplements can help significantly improve many common health problems in dogs, from itchy skin and lacklustre coats to stiff joints and poor circulation.

Always speak to your veterinarian before giving your dog supplements of any kind. If your dog has any underlying medical conditions, supplements could be harmful to their health.

Is Fish Oil a Good Supplement For Dogs?

Fish oil –– in particular, salmon oil –– is regarded as one of the best supplements for dogs of all ages. It is rich in Omega-3, which has many health benefits for dogs that become visible after just a few weeks of use.

Fish oil is high in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), two highly powerful Omega-3 fatty acids that aid brain and eye development in puppies and supports cognitive function in older dogs. DHA and EPA also help keep dogs skin healthy and coats glossy.

If your dog suffers from pain or discomfort from stiff joints, itchy skin, poor circulation or cracked paws, salmon oil can make a significant improvement to their wellbeing. It can also help to maintain eye and brain function as these naturally deteriorate with age, as well as keeping joints supple, helping older dogs to stay active. Older dogs’ immune systems also become weaker with age. Using salmon oil supplements can help bolster their immune system, making them less prone to illnesses and infections.

Should I Give My Dog Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is a natural amino sugar found in the fluid around dogs’ joints that helps to build cartilage, preserving dogs’ joint health. It is believed to be effective in treating arthritis by relieving joint pain, which could improve mobility in older dogs.

Glucosamine is often combined with chondroitin sulfate, another naturally occurring compound found in the connective tissues of a dog’s bone and cartilage.

Some side effects of supplementing glucosamine have been reported, including fatigue, insomnia and excessive urination. If your dog displays any of these side effects, stop supplementing them straight away and consult your veterinarian for alternatives. Due to these detrimental effects, salmon oil makes an excellent alternative as it reduces inflammation and helps keep joints supple without any drawbacks. It can reduce the likelihood of your dog developing arthritis in old age, keeping them happy and comfortable throughout their lives.

Are Probiotics Good for Dogs?

If your dog is fed a nutritionally rich diet, probiotics aren’t necessary. Gently cooked dog food preserves the nutritional value and gives dogs all of the nutrition they should need to live happy and healthy lives. Probiotics might be recommended by a veterinarian if your dog has a bad case of diarrhoea or other digestive problems, but only then should probiotics be used.

Be careful when supplementing probiotics, as overpopulation of gut bacteria will interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption. Consult your veterinarian if your dog is experiencing problems with digestion as they can suggest alternative options better suited to your dog.
